Neuropsychological Rehabilitation in Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders.

Brain disorders and injuries are characterized as “silent epidemic” in the developed countries, and they concern all ages. Brain damage consequences influence functions of movement, behavior and cognition. Until now, evidence supported that the human brain was structurally static and cognitive rehabilitation techniques were rarely effective, after experiencing stroke. However, recent findings indicate strong evidence on brain plasticity, by acknowledging that certain brain circuits can be reorganized, and that the application of cognitive rehabilitation positively contributes on the recovery of cognitive functioning, as well as on the functionality of individuals who have suffered brain injuries.
Cognitive rehabilitation refers to a non-pharmaceutical neurobehavioral treatment of cognitive functioning, behavior and mood, which might have been disrupted due to brain injury or brain disease. The aforementioned therapeutical technique is acknowledged worldwide and is in respect of specific cognitive rehabilitation and recovery exercises, learning alternative cognitive strategies that cannot be recovered and in special treatments for deviant behavior and psychiatric disposition.
In the rehabilitation process a collaboration between a group of rehabilitation experts (physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists) takes place. However, occasionally, the expert responsible for cognitive rehabilitation is a clinical psychologist, due to his/her expertise and long-term clinical training in cognitive, behavioral and psychopathological manifestations seen in brain injuries or mental disorders.
To whom it is addressed?
The two-day seminar is addressed to Postgraduate and PhD students, as well as health care professionals (psychologists, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists and other expertise), that have at least an introductory training on cognitive rehabilitation and are interested to pursue a career on clinics or independently with individuals who have suffered from brain injury, neurological or psychiatric disorders that disrupt cognitive functioning.
Location
The two-day seminar will be held at the Center of Dissemination of Research Findings.
Center of Dissemination of Research Findings of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 2006 and operated for the first time on April 2011. The building is located in 3rd Septemvriou street on the University Campus in between the Students Club and the University Gym. A significant architectural characteristic of it, is its red color.
